"Close your eyes let your spirit start to soar, and you'll live as you've never lived before..."

I’m. The. Luckiest. Girl. In. The. World.

Seriously.

So, this may come as a bit of a shock, but no, I’ve never been to a show on Broadway or, honestly, really even cared to. I always regarded Broadway as being too, well, um, flamboyant for even my taste. My best friend, Andrea, forced me to watch “A Chorus Line” once in high school on video, back when people still used VHS. Needless to say, I was unimpressed.

Kevin, however, begs to differ on the whole Broadway matter. When he recently discovered that I’d never seen “Phantom of the Opera,” he practically choked/had a coronary/popped his eyes six inches out of their sockets. “But it’s the most romantic, sentimental show ever!” he exclaimed, still in utter disbelief. (One must remember that I’m easily the most romantic, sentimental person ever.)

(My eyes totally look JUST like this...really...)

So…I suppose it is a little strange that I haven’t seen it. But every time I saw anything about it on TV or wherever, it just seemed maudlin and over-the-top and contrived. (One must also remember that I’m quick to make snap judgments that are frequently arbitrary and have no basis in logic whatsoever.)

Last weekend, Kevin and I were flipping through channels and we happened upon a special about “Phantom” – its conception, its history, the execution of the special effects, the drama behind the scenes, and so on. Listening to bits and pieces of the score and witnessing the incredible stage effects, I was immediately sold. I needed to see this show.

So…Kevin being the equally romantic man that he is, and ridiculously amazing and generous-hearted and incredible boyfriend that he is, immediately insisted on a mini-vacation in the middle of the month to fly up to New York City (as always, first-class), stay in a lavish, spacious, gorgeous hotel suite (as usual) – http://gansevoortpark.com/, AND he got $500 premium orchestra seats to see “Phantom” at the Majestic Theatre (he wanted the best seats, of course, and thoughtfully wanted me to be close enough to see the orchestra and sheet music to appreciate the difficulty of the music as a musician myself and see all the dancers up-close as a dancer myself).

He broke the news to me last night at our weekly Friday Night Super Romantic Date at the Capital Grille over an incredible, delicate Bordeaux (oh, how I would do almost anything for their lobster macaroni and cheese and perfect steaks…boy, has Kevin spoiled me on amazing filet mignon – even to the point where I was sick of it for a while – yes, I’m insane).

It took literally all of my energy and willpower to contain my excitement. Excitement is an understatement. I couldn’t stop bouncing up and down in our booth, trying to squeal quietly, my cheeks flushing red, like I was five-years-old and I’d just been told I was going to Disneyworld. (I’ve actually never been to Disneyworld, either, come to think of it. My family wasn’t exactly big on vacations…as in, we’ve never taken a family vacation. Ever.)

Train of thought: ohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygod…

I called as many friends as I could think of who would appreciate how special this was. Andrea didn’t pick up her phone, of course. Lauren F. (who lives in New York City) was in a bar and couldn’t pick up but was thrilled over texts and couldn’t wait to see us (the one mutual friend Kevin and I had before we were together). I almost called my dad. But it was almost 11:00 p.m. and I knew he wouldn’t be at the office and that he would be bored to death at my announcement because he has no appreciation for the arts or for, well, almost anything.

Anyway. WHATEVER. I’M GOING TO “PHANTOM OF THE OPERA” WITH KEV ON BROADWAY ON DECEMBER 17 AND I WON’T EVEN LET AN UNTIMELY DEATH STOP ME.

SO. EXCITED. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

xoxo,

Elizabeth Alida

P.S. On a side note, I just discovered http://www.happyplace.com/. If you haven’t seen it yet, GO. NOW. I DEMAND IT. I think I might even love it more than http://www.textsfromlastnight.com/. Which is virtually impossible.

Oh, and did I mention that Kevin’s taking me to New York for a romantic vacation in New York City in T-minus two weeks? !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My cheeks hurt from smiling…
